Hormones and mental health

Hormones…

We talk about them often and even blame them for our behavior or emotions at times. But did you know that your hormones can have a significant impact on your mental health?

According to the National Institutes of Health, studies have shown that after puberty, there is an increased risk for Major Depressive Disorder. This may happen due to the increased production of estrogen and progesterone, which have shown to have a controlling influence of mood and behavior through the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, thalamus and brain stem.[1]

Studies have also found a correlation between suicidal thoughts or behaviors and progesterone and estrogen. Additionally, these studies highlighted the relationship between progesterone levels and history of suicidal attempts. Results found that most females attempt suicide during the luteal phase of their menstrual cycle. [2]

Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are brain chemicals that significantly influence mental health. When estrogen levels are high, women have shown to be in a better mood, with an increase in verbal memory (around ovulation). However, once progesterone levels increase (after ovulation), woman may have a lower mood, which may potentially contribute to symptoms of depression. [3]

In conclusion…when your advocating for your mental health, also advocate for your hormones!
